Shining low-energy lightbulbs on clever ways to save
SCOTT BANNER was not at all surprised to hear that Ku-ring-gai residents are the hungriest power consumers in Sydney.Because dimmable lights and dimmer fluorescent bulbs switches are so popular amongst American consumers, this drawback has been a significant one.
''There are big houses, big gardens, a lot of pools, and fairly well-off people so they just go, 'If I've got to pay to run the aircon, I can afford it,' '' he said.
But bucking the neighbourhood trend, the Banner family - Scott, his wife, Gina, and their daughters, Maggie, 7, and Amy, 2 - have worked hard to cut down their electricity consumption by making their Lindfield home as energy-efficient as possible.

Big power bills were not the main factor, said Mr Banner, an electrical engineer, but he is pleased they are in a position to reap savings from their energy-efficiency investments. ''I hate waste. I think we all need to be conscious of what we do and just use what we need,'' he said.
Mr Banner began making modifications six years ago by replacing the hot water system with solar hot water. With government rebates it cost about $2700, or about $1300 more than a new electric hot water heater, but Mr Banner calculates it has paid itself off because of the power savings he has made since installing it.
More recently, he has been replacing every light in the house and garden with low-energy compact fluorescent bulbs. All the halogen downlights were exchanged for LED downlights. The new bulbs use one-fifth of the electricity and significantly reduced costs.
The family has also installed ceiling fans and bought an energy-efficient fridge. Now Mr Banner is turning his attention to the pool: ''I've been researching how I'm going to save power there … You can get variable speed pool pumps that use a lot less power. It was quick and light when I used dsttマジコン on a Windows 7 laptop, and gave me no trouble throughout a day of rigorous testing. He believes rising power prices will have some positive outcomes.
''I think it's good that power prices are going up, because people value what they're going to pay for in our capitalist economy. People might start using the aircon less. Price incentives will bring more of these things into the market.''
