Paul has wanted to purchase a flat screen television for two years now. I have to admit that I have no real desire for one. There are two things that I like about flat screen televisions: the amazing definition and vibrancy of colors on Planet Earth, Blue Earth, and other neat shows, and being able to mount the unit on a wall so that they take up less space. But these two positives are not enough for me to choose to prioritize a large chunk of money towards the purchase of one.

However, Paul has diligently and patiently waited for two years, prices have dropped since 2005, we are both gainfully employed, we've built up a fully stocked emergency fund, and we are out of non-mortgage debt—who am I to say no now?

I still do not want to pay full price for one and thought I had found the perfect deal to be able to surprise Paul on Christmas day: a 40" Toshiba LCD HDTV for $380 at Best Buy. But when I reached the store it turned out that I had missed the sale by a few days.

The sales associate felt bad about it, and with a wink and a nudge-nudge he confided to me that at midnight on Thanksgiving Day I could grab a flat screen television for an incredible $199. I still don’t own a tablet. I like the concept of having a light computing device that I can carry around, that’s large enough to let me read books and surf the web at ease, but a touchscreen is limiting and lacks some of the standard functionality of a laptop. So in the end, you just have another mobile device to lug around.

For example, try writing an article on a touchscreen. Using a virtual keyboard is often uncomfortable and handwriting recognition software becomes ridiculous if you’re jotting down more than a few words. So how can you get the functionality of its least a netbook out of a tablet without the use of a keyboard? Well, the answer is simple: Add a keyboard. Certainly, you can buy keyboard docks for many tablets on the market and some even come with battery packs that can recharge the tablet. But that can add another couple of hundred dollars to your purchase. And it’s just another periphery to carry with you. So Asus has gone one step farther with their Eee Pad Slider SL101, and built in a keyboard.

In fact, the only real problem is that it doesn’t have a touchpad. For example, highlighting content is a little clumsy. Normally, you tap the screen to highlight and and a bar appears on the screen which you pull down into a box to grab the text you want. It’s awkward but presumably it’s set up like that so you don’t accidentally highlight content while you’re trying to click on menus or switch between screens. But unfortunately highlighting text with a mouse works exactly the same way. But this is a software issue not a hardware one, so, theoretically, this could be fixed with an update to Honeycomb, or perhaps by converting to Ice Cream Sandwich (the next-gen Android OS which merges its tablet and smartphone OSes) when it comes out.

Honeycomb still has less apps available than on the iPad or even in Gingerbread. But at least for site-based apps, you can circumvent this by downloading the Opera Mobile browser. It’s a little slower than the Chrome and Firefox apps, but you can change the user agent to desktop which forces all websites to load their full versions and not their crappy mobile ones. This, of course, is something an iPad can’t do, due to the prevalence of Flash on the Internet, and why those site-based apps were designed in the first place.

There is a huge potential market for retrofit LED lamps that offer high performance at an acceptable price point, according to TIM WHITAKER.
It’s generally accepted that if you started with a blank sheet of paper, you wouldn’t design LED lamps that look much like conventional incandescent or fluorescent lamps (either linear fluorescents or CFLs). This is because it’s difficult to match the thermal and optical characteristics of LEDs with the form factors of conventional lamps and their sockets. Even so, there is a huge potential market for retrofit LED lamps that offer high performance at an acceptable price point, and companies are racing to stake their claim. Literally minutes ago I received an email entitled “First 100-watt-equivalent LED bulb” – see below for more details.

However, retrofit lamps are not the only answer.Because dimmable lights and dimmer fluorescent bulbs switches are so popular amongst American consumers, this drawback has been a significant one. Cree, for example, recently announced a series of LED luminaires that are designed to replace the types of ceiling troffer fixture into which one would place a linear fluorescent lamp. As described on page 9,print still offers the only truly dstti unlimited 4G plan in America, and it's the only service you can safely use as an alternative to a home Internet connection. in Cree’s luminaires a color-mixing chamber and ref lector system produce the desired light output, while a room-side heat sink is incorporated as a design element.

Back to retrofit lamps. Yesterday I received a press release entitled “Philips to unveil the world’s first LED replacement for the 75-watt light bulb.” The EnduraLED A21 lamp consumes 17W, but will not be available until the fourth quarter of 2011 in the US.LED grow light suppliers in China are sky lanterns rolling out models with better price-performance ratios. So perhaps the word “prototype” should have been included in Philips’ press release. Several other companies might also disagree with the use of the words “world’s first.” The press release also says that the suggested retail price for consumers has not yet been finalized but is expected to be in the range of $40-45. Oddly, Philips did not give specifications except to say that the lamp has “been developed to meet or exceed Energy Star qualifications” for a 75W replacement i.e. 1100 lumens at 17W (65 lm/W), a color temperature of 2700K, a CRI of 80, and a 25,000-hr life.

In fact, Switch Lighting announced a 75W-replacement LED lamp several weeks ago (page 16). The design has some unusual features, namely outward-facing LEDs mounted on metal fingers, inside a globe filled with an inert liquid. This creates a socalled self-cooling environment inside the bulb, allowing maximum brightness with fewer LEDs, says the company. And just in time for Lightfair, Switch said it would show a 100-watt-equivalent A19 LED lamp that produces 1700 lm in neutral white, which is “the same beautiful white color as halogen track lighting,” said Brett Sharenow, Switch’s Chief Strategy Officer. He added that the company “will offer a warm-white version of the 100W-equivalent bulb in mid-to late-2012.”

These announcements indicate the performance levels that we can expect to see in the shops over the next 1-2 years, although retail prices will need to hit the appropriate levels. The ongoing improvement in lamp performance is enabled in part by LED makers who continue to push the limits of LED efficacy,it may become necessary for Cree to look at led bulb purchasing additional LED lighting fixture firs in order to increase their market penetration in this area. for example Cree’s R&D result of 231 lm/W for a 4500K LED (page 10). Another factor is the development of more advanced LED fabrication processes,sale of LED for lighting applications.  Semileds is led lights only a minor palyer and should currently not be mentioned in the same breath as the other others which are helping to improve yields and reduce costs, as our articles on pages 31 and 41 describe.

Miami Heat forward Chris Bosh is a star on the basketball court. Away from it, Bosh said he prefers to be invisible.

Nine years removed from leading Dallas Lincoln to the nation's No. 1 ranking with a 40-0 record, Bosh has developed into one of the NBA's best forwards.

But for a player who wants no part of the limelight, Bosh certainly didn't do himself any favors last July when he signed a six-year, $110 million contract to play alongside two of the league's top players in Dwyane Wade and LeBron James.

During the last year, Bosh has been thrust into the national spotlight after hiding in relative obscurity the first seven years of his NBA career in hockey-crazy Toronto.

That's become even more pronounced with the Heat back in the NBA Finals for the first time since 2006 and facing - of all teams - Bosh's hometown Mavericks.

"It's kind of surreal, but at the end of the day we have to play somebody to accomplish our goal and really it doesn't matter," Bosh said. "It's just a coincidence."

What's more is that many of Bosh's big decisions have come in Dallas, so it would make the perfect place for him to win his first NBA title.

In May 2003, after playing one season at Georgia Tech, Bosh announced at Lincoln that he was declaring for the NBA draft.

When the clock struck midnight last July 1 to signal the beginning of free agency, Bosh was in Dallas and met with representatives from five NBA teams (Toronto, Chicago, Houston, New York and Miami) over a three-hour period. Bosh's younger brother, Joel, was there to witness the madness.

"At midnight, somebody rang the doorbell. And they literally put their offers on the table that night," Joel Bosh said. "They all had A-1 presentations. They all came bearing gifts. It was a trip to see."

Bosh decided that the best place for him to win an NBA championship was Miami. Bosh is a great fit on the Heat, considering he prefers to deflect attention to others. Wade and James soak up plenty of the headlines nationally. Bosh said he's had his cell phone turned off for weeks.

Heat posters and shirts dot this city from one beach to the other, most featuring Bosh as part of Miami's "Big Three." If it were up to Bosh, however, he'd have no problem standing behind Wade and James on the promotional items. Bosh prefers to linger in the shadows.

Bosh, a member of the National Honor Society, doesn't listen to music in the locker room before games like many of his teammates. Instead, he reads books to mellow out.

"I get one, and I like to wind down and have a calm moment before the craziness happens," Bosh said, "and really enjoy being in my own world."

Off the court, Bosh is anything but in his own world these days. In late September, Bosh purchased a 12,000-square-foot home that has seven bedrooms and eight bathrooms in Miami Beach for $12.5 million (a steal considering it was originally listed for $16 million).

The mansion features 20-foot ceilings, a gym, an elevator, an infinity pool and a gourmet kitchen, which is perfect considering Bosh employs his own chef.

Miami Beach is quite the contrast from the colder days when Bosh lived in a modest condo in downtown Toronto, waking up to snow instead of the beachfront.

Bosh's father, Noel, moved from Dallas to Miami in late November and lives in Bosh's guesthouse. Bosh's brother, Joel,You can easily say that it is a passion or a way to express yourself. "I knew it was not the popular choice for outsiders looking in, and I wasn't really worried about that," Bosh said. "I was just focused on winning the championship. I knew it was going to bring a lot more elements to my life and my family's life, but that's what I've been dreaming of since I was a kid, so I had to take advantage of it while I had the opportunity.

"So many people disagreed with our moves. But, you know, we feel like it was the right choice, and I think it's evident."

“Everything is bang on target and we expect the final bacteria tests to take place next Monday. Assuming it passes that, we hope to open on Wednesday or Thursday next week, which is a mighty relief.

“We’ll have checks in place to make sure we don’t get caught out again like this.

“We were crushed and disappointed when it happened but at least with all the press coverage people know we’re here and will be open soon.”

Lighting Research Center

The LRC is the world's leading university-based research and education organization devoted to lighting. Programs and activities at the center include laboratory testing and real-world demonstration and evaluation of lighting products, while also conducting research into energy efficiency, new products and technologies, lighting design, and human factors issues. The LRC offers a doctoral program and one- and two-year master's degree programs in lighting, as well as global training programs for government agencies, utilities, contractors, lighting designers, and other lighting professionals.

"We see the LRC as the nucleus for independent lighting research and education, as well as the pre-eminent source of objective, timely information about lighting technologies, applications, and about human response to light," said Rensselaer Professor and LRC Director Mark Rea. For example, research by Rensselaer Professor Nadarajah Narendran led to the development of the Scattered Photon Extraction method for improving white LED performance by more than 30 percent. The ERC team is working to create better LEDs, as well as new sensors and systems required to effectively to monitor and control these LEDs.

"We see the ERC as the advanced research engine for future solid-state lighting systems that will bring a vast new range of capabilities to lighting," said Rensselaer Professor and ERC Director Robert Karlicek. In one project, Rensselaer Professor Partha Dutta works with an interdisciplinary team of undergraduate students to demonstrate the feasibility of LCD-based virtual windows. To make virtual window technology a reality, the displays need to be bright and efficient enough to reproduce light from an actual window. Rensselaer Professors Christian Wetzel and Shawn-Yu Lin are developing the technologies needed to create a family of polarized LEDs in various colors that will achieve the required brightness and reduction in energy consumption.

While the settlement garnered support from the Lehman creditors' committee and court-appointed trustee James Giddens, bondholders were lukewarm.

Led by hedge fund Paulson & Co, bondholders filed court papers last week arguing that Lehman's total tax liability -- roughly $2 billion -- should be split fairly among its subsidiaries.

Under the current structure, 75 percent of the costs would fall to the holding company, the parent entity to which the bondholders are direct creditors. The bondholders say New York's tax code supports the position that the bills should be split more evenly, and they reserved their right to pose that argument formally later in the case.

An attorney for Lehman said the settlement motion does not address allocation.

Oval Plus LEDs are lighting a new home community and a larger conversion is

in existing housings.
The design relies on the Golden Dragon Oval Plus LEDs
to form the beam pattern. The LEDs feature an integrated oval lens that can
spread the beam in a somewhat rectangular pattern along a roadway, with minimal

About the beam qualities of the components and the Kassel retrofit,

Based on the LED
retrofit, Pielenhofen would realize what’s essentially 50% energy savings based
on the lower-power kits, but the savings will actually be greater because the
community is using dimmable SSL technology. The dimming functionality was proven
out in the Kassel retrofit last year where late at night the power consumption
is further reduced to 14W per fixture.

Pielenhofen plans to upgrade to
LED street lighting across the entire community in stages. Indeed European Union
