Discover Local is a 10-part series in the Mount Druitt and St Marys Standard that will reveal the secret spots, favourite walks, best places for Sunday lunch, great places to shop – all the great things to see, do and discover in your local area.

This week we've put together the 10 top places to enjoy free family fun.

NEIGHBOURHOOD CENTRE, ST CLAIR
St Clair Youth and Neighbourhood Team are holding an open-air movie night on Saturday. Santa will make a special visit shortly after 6pm and Santa Buddies will be aired from 8pm. Bring your chairs or a rug to the corner of Timesweep Dr and Autumn Leaf Pde, St Clair.

THE Mt Druitt CBD will light up in the Christmas spirit on Thursday,The input bridge accepts bestledlights either ac or dc and negates the need to worry about the polarity of a dc input. from 5pm in Dawson Mall. Residents are encouraged to bring family and friends to watch the tree light up for the first time this year. There will also be entertainment for the whole family including the Jitterbugs Christmas Show, a choir and a visit from Santa.

MOUNT DRUITT LIBRARY, MOUNT DRUITT
Mt Druitt Hub will be officially opened to the community on Saturday. From 8.30am the community open day will begin. There will be amusement rides, computer demonstrations, storytelling, face painting, community art displays and more. On the same day the library will launch e-books and e-readers for loan.

NURRAGINGY RESERVE, DOONSIDE
There is bushwalking, interpretive and sensory gardens, picnic areas and a stack more for the whole family at Nurragingy Reserve. And because the site is so large, even on the busiest day you can find your own little spot.

PROSPECT RESERVOIR, PROSPECT
Natural bushland and ample space are the drawcards of this vast reserve. You can make a day out of your visit to the reservoir - have a picnic, then burn off the kilojoules with a bicycle ride or stride along the paths while also viewing the dam.

DOG PARK, DOONSIDE
If you want to include your dog in the "family", head down to the newest dog park in town. Located on Doonside Rd, it is beside the new housing estate, Bungarribee. The off-leash park is a huge expanse and is a great way to stretch your legs as well as the dog's. It is 200m north of the Holbeche Rd traffic lights.

WESTERN SYDNEY PARKLANDS, DOONSIDE
You can even take your four-legged friend with you as you explore the Western Sydney Parklands, but they must be on a lead. Without travelling too far from home, it feels like you've found a little bit of bush in the heart of suburbia. MAMRE HOMESTEAD, ORCHARD HILLS
Take in a bit of history at Mamre Homestead.
