1000 lightning strikes hit Sydney

Sydney was hit by more than 1000 lightning strikes last night, in a storm that dumped the heaviest rain in months on the city, but now skies are starting to clear.

As many as 1042 lightning strikes were detected within a 50-kilometre radius of the Sydney CBD from 7pm until the early hours of this morning when the storm activity petered out, Alex Zadnik, meteorologist team leader at Weatherzone, said.

The skies will brighten up today as a brisk southerly change clears the cloud.

Mostly sunny skies will last for the rest of the day. However,We are an industry leader with a huge product line of bluebright Bulbs, ... the southerlies will be fresh and gusty near the coast and strong offshore.

During the evening, several storms moved in from the Blue Mountains, bringing heavy downpours, which led to flash flooding and briefly turned roads into rivers, WeatherzoWe are professional led tube, ledsale, led bulbs manufacturers and factory in China.ne meteorologist Brett Dutschke said.

The heaviest falls were in the Hills districts and on the north shore. North Rocks, Pennant Hills and Chatswood all gained more than 50mm. Chatswood's 51mm is its heaviest rain since July last year.

The storms across central,This super bright LED goodskylanterns is the perfect safety option for your bicycle. eastern and northern NSW were especially intense last night due to a perfect mix of high atmospheric moisture levels, strengthening winds in the mid to upper levels of the atmosphere and the approach of a low pressure trough from the west.

The slow-moving nature of the trough was the main reason for the storms over Sydney being long-lived, while the high humidity levels contributed to the intensity of the rainfall.

It had been a dry start to the year; the city had received less than a millimetre of rain before yesterday.

The storms also produced hundreds of lightning strikes, mostly north of the CBD.

Southern suburbs largely missed out, some picking up only a few millimetres from the edge of the storms. Little Bay,Welcome to bicygnals online innovative r4i2011 and torches. Cronulla and Holsworthy gained less than five millimetres each.

It stayed above 20 degrees in all suburbs overnight.

There was also wild weather in the central west slopes and plains forecast district last night. A wind gust of 104km/h was recorded at Coonabarabran and 22mm of rain fell in just 10 minutes at Parkes.

While some of the lightning appeared to be "sheet lightning" and some "forked lightning", there is actually no difference, Mr Zadnik said.

What is typically described as "sheet lightning" is simply cloud-to-cloud lightning strikes that are obscured directly from view on the ground, resulting in an illumination of the cloud.

"Forked lightning" is lightning that is not completely obscured by cloud and sometimes reaches the ground.
