Most importantly, when I compared head-to-head results in individual test rounds, said Maria Myers, county recycling manager.

In addition, many items in good shape can be donated to nonprofits and charitable organizations. The county hosts a donation site for Goodwill Industries at Northern Landfill, which replaced the landfill's Swap Shop, Myers said.

The county just added a Habitat for Humanity ReStore collection site at the Northern Landfill Recycling Center. ReStore is a nonprofit retail organization specializing in the resale of quality new and used building materials, home furnishings and appliances to the public. It uses the funds to build or renovate affordable housing for families in need. Donations collected in Carroll will be taken to the ReStore Home Improvement Center in Frederick, Myers said.

So before throwing something away, Myers said, consider whether someone else could use it or whether it could be recycled, even if it might mean a trip to the landfill.
